11 Unique Experiences in the South of Pantanal

Amolar experience is an incomparable trip to one of the most beautiful places in Brazil. In this singular place are three important dimensions: nature conservation, contact with the local culture and community, and essential projects developed in this region.

Content Summary

The whole “Instituto Homem Pantaneiro” structure involves as a foundation its experiences with works related to research, projects in partnership with local communities and nature protection.

Serra do Amolar

Our director Daniela during our last inspection to Serra do Amolar in June 2022.

Where is located Serra do Amolar?

The starting point of the trip is Corumbá. A city on the border of Bolivia. It’s located on the banks of the Paraguay River, one of the gateways to Pantanal.

The Amolar Experience

We highlighted parts of some experiences you certainly will find there.

1. Authenticity

An opportunity to get in touch with the people who live in Pantanal, to get to know their culture through their stories, their perceptions of life, their way of living and their own wisdom. All of these moments will make the trip even richer.

2. Inspiring projects
Jatobazinho Rural School, for instance, is one of these inspiring projects. This educational action is a result of a public-private partnership between the Acaia Institute and the Corumbá city hall. It provides elementary schooling for 60 riverside children and contributes to a social development through educational actions integrated with the preservation of the biome.
3. Breathtaking landscapes

As the famous Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado said: “One of the most remote regions of the Pantanal but also the most beautiful”. And he was being serious about it. With wide rivers, corixos, bays and flooded plains elegantly contrasting with the green of the vegetation and the mirrored blue of the sky, it is possible to find the delicate water hyacinth or a mountain over 900 meters high.

4. Crystal clear waters of the Taquaral River near the Paraguay-Mirim

Clear waters and a perfect temperature are the ideal combination to a refreshing bath on the way between Corumbá and the Acurizal Reserve. There’s the possibility to observe aquatic vegetation, fishes, rays and, surprise, alligators.

5. Accommodation at the Acurizal Private Natural Heritage Reserve

A research center located on the edge of the river and at the foot of the Serra do Amolar. The center has a simple structure adapted to receive visitors. There are four-bed rooms, a cafeteria, a meeting room, a swimming pool and, of course, a warm welcome from all the people who work there.

6. Tasty food prepared with pinches of affection

Flavor, care and love are the most important ingredients to each meal. And how about enjoying lunch under the shade of the trees?

7. Work in partnership with the riverside communities

During our visit to the community of Barra do Rio São Lourenço, we went to Ms. Eliane’s house. She’s one of the founders of the Renascer group.
Renascer is a group of women who work exclusively collecting fishing lures. Their wish is to change their scenario and increase their production of handicrafts made of water hyacinth fiber.

8. Hiking Trails in the Serra do Amolar

An active way to get to know the Pantanal is by walking! Through, for example, the Sun Trail (800 m), the Zogue-zogue Trail (1 km), the South Trail (6 km) or the Morrinhos Trail (8km). In each one of these trails are the chance to be a little more adventurous and curious.

9. Exceptional Guides

A guide is someone who can understand nature and lead us to a connection with a place and its different inhabitants. During this travel, the guides reveal a dynamic combination of science and their life experience. This blend brings a serious but magic narrative to these professionals’ voices.

10. Wildlife

Take river safaris through an immensity of canals and bays surprising yourself every minute with rare animals. It is not an easy place to find jaguars, but when you do, it is without a doubt an unforgettable encounter.

11. Sunset tour to the Gaíva Bay

We are in the freshwater world surrounded by mountains. There you will find one of the most beautiful sunsets on the planet.
